The pistachio a member of the cashew family, is a small tree originating from Central Asia and the Middle East. The tree produces seeds that are widely consumed as food. Since 2017, Iran accounted for over half the world’s production of pistachios.
Most pistachio production in Iran is in Rafsanjan, Sirjan, Damghan, Neyriz, Marvast, Anar, Shahrabak, Ravar, Kerman and Na’in. The most important type of pistachio is the “Akbari pistachio” , which is known as super long pistachio on the world market. In general, pistachio kinds are divided into two groups, round and long, that the most famous ones are called Kalle Ghuchi, Fandaghi and Akbari… but traditionally there are about eight species of pistachio in Iran, some of which are widely distributed and commercial and some dispersed and are limited in cultivation.
Pistachio is used in food industrial and also is one the most popular nuts that Iranians use in festivals and ceremonies like Nowruz, Yalda Night and etc.
